Online Leadership and Clinical Governance training courses

Working in collaboration with the Australasian Institute of Clinical Governance (AICG), a division of Health Education Australia Limited (HEAL), MDA National is offering Members the opportunity to complete two comprehensive online training courses – tackling the crucial concepts of Leadership and Clinical Governance.

The importance of leadership skills in the medical profession has traditionally taken a back seat to technical ability and academic achievement.2 However, patient complications arising from poor leadership - along with evidence on the positive association between leadership and unit performance - has led to an increased focus on developing doctor’s leadership skills.2 Good leadership promotes quality patient care and is instrumental in successful career progression. But how can we develop leadership skills?

Clinical governance is a framework by which all healthcare staff are held responsible for the continual improvement of patient care, through the establishment of an environment in which excellence thrives.3 In other words, it is doing “the right thing, at the right time, by the right person.”3

Good clinical governance is considered to have several key elements, including patient safety, quality improvement systems, clinical performance & effectiveness, governance, leadership & culture, partnering with consumers and a safe environment for the delivery of care. As doctors play an active role in the provision of patient care, an understanding of clinical governance is key to ongoing career success. But how is this achieved?

During a typical hospital admission, patients will interact with numerous healthcare providers, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and technicians. Consequently, effective communication and collaboration between healthcare professionals are essential to patient safety and quality of care.4

A collaborative culture is one where healthcare professionals communicate – working together to share problem-solving and decision-making responsibilities in partnership with patients and families.4  Communication, Culture & Collaboration walk hand in hand and are integral to effective clinical governance. But how can we upskill in these areas?
