MDA National has supported the Royal Australia College of General Practice since 2014, via various face to face activities including as the technology sponsor at the college’s flagship conference, and through the provision of RACGP’s various publications. We also invest time and resources into developing both face-to-face and online CPD accredited education that is relevant to general practitioners needs with a focus on safe medical practice.

MDA National is working with the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) to provide advocacy and support for our Members who service rural and remote communities, and enhance the quality and frequency of medico-legal education for Australia’s rural and remote doctors.

MDA National and RDAA Rural Health Bursary

For the past six years, MDA National has generously offered an annual Rural Health Bursary in collaboration with the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) - of which MDA National is a long-term major sponsor.

The initiative is also supported by in-kind involvement from the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA).

The Bursary is valued at $7000 + GST and is intended to assist an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander medical student with travel, accommodation and other living / study expenses related to any of the following:

  • undertaking a rural or remote clinical placement to experience this rewarding area of medical practice or to develop skills in a particular area of medicine in order to assist a rural or remote community
  • any other activity (including research) that would benefit rural/remote Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander patients and/or rural/remote health
  • relocation, living and/or study expenses to support their study

The Bursary also supports attendance (including travel, accommodation and/or other expenses) at the popular Rural Medicine Australia conference hosted each year by RDAA and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).

To be considered for the Bursary, applicants must be:

  • undertaking their 2nd - 5th year of an undergraduate degree in Medicine
  • undertaking their 2nd or 3rd year of a post-graduate degree in Medicine

Successful applicants must either come from a rural and remote area and/or have a demonstrable commitment to rural or remote practice and/or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

Applicants can be based either in rural/remote or urban locations as long as there is a specific rural or remote focus to their proposal.

Additionally, clinical placements or research may take place in urban areas as long as the learned skill or research is of demonstrable benefit to rural or remote medical practice and patients.

Applicants must be a current member of AIDA by the closing date for applications to be eligible for consideration.

Power banks to keep you connected

MDA National is offering complimentary power banks* to those who are Members of both their state Rural Doctors Association (or RDAA) and MDA National. This covers doctors who are already Members of both organisations and also those who join MDA National now.

These power banks are just one small way MDA National aims to support Australia’s rural and remote doctors.

All you have to do is email events@mdanational.com.au with your MDA National Member number and let us know which state Rural Doctors Association you are a member of (or RDAA, if you are Northern Territory based).
